Sawley Abbey - Founded 1147
Home to Cistercian monks for almost four hundred years until it was dissolved in 1536. The monks joined protesters in the Pilgrimage of Grace, a rebellion against the Dissolution of many of the North's Catholic monasteries. Two monks from Sawley were arrested and executed on the order of Henry VIII and the Abbey was dismantled.
